About our ranch and Highland Cattle Celtic Cow Ranch is located in the Paulina Mountains southeast of Bend, Oregon, and is home to a herd of Scottish highland cattle. Our cattle are never penned. Free-ranging on approximately thirty-five acres of pasture and ponderosa forest, their diet consists of pasture and native grasses or grass hay. Everything produced by our herd is harvested and either sold or recycled, from their manure which nourishes our fields and gardens to calves for breeding, meat, hides , bones for our dogs and even horns for black powder carriers and decoration by true Scots.

The
breed is ancient, having lived for centuries in the rugged and
remote Scottish Highlands where the harsh conditions created a
process of natural selection that produced a very fit and
adaptable animal of superior intelligence. Raised from calves
selected because they exhibited the best traits of this ancient
breed, our herd is friendly, easy to handle, amazingly healthy,
and low maintenance.
We have no winter shelter worries,
since
insulated by thick coats of long hair, they prefer to stand out
in winter storms. In the spring they shed their long hair as
they adapt to warmer weather. They are bright and responsive,
with each animal knowing its name and the herd coming to a
whistle. Several of our cows are literally huge hug-a-pets.
Although they have handsome sets of horns, we regularly walk
among them without incident.
